Ask HN: Do you provide your drivers license to agencies?

I have gotten calls from IT agencies who want, and sometimes near-insist, that you hand over a copy of your drivers license or similar in order to prove that you are not fake - so that you can be submitted for a job.

I prob have done it before, but also not done it mostly.

Is there some middle ground?

I'm convinced they would not be asking for it if they did not need it or _something_ to prove that you are you, but that's pretty hardcore sensitive information, imo.

Is there a middle ground?

For all my important documents, SSN, Passport, Driving Licence, Car registration etc, I scan them using a flat bed scanner and store them on my computer.

If anyone asks, I send them a jpg/png of whatever (I don't confirm if this is acceptable or not first, let them complain first). Everyone seems to take it without question.

Might be worth giving it a shot.

you don't obfuscate any of the important info?

Sure, on a case by case bases, but I keep the original raw.
