I work with healthcare data for a living, and the idea of the vast amount of suffering my data represents is something I have been thinking about a lot lately. Each row represents what is often the worst day of someone's life, or their death. It represents immense pain and possibly years of rehab that they may never fully recover from. It's so easy to just look at it as data, as code. None of us can understand what it means to have lost so many lives to COVID, all those unique individuals, life stories, families and friends. But I think we owe it to them to at least try.
