Ask HN: Screen Sharing or Window Only?

I’m researching whether folks usually share their entire screen during video calls, or individual windows?

My personal experience is that sharing the whole screen is simpler and flexible (I can show anything without having to select another window), but it can cause privacy issues or make me look messy with icons around my desktop :)

On the other hand, picking a specific window is less flexible as I have to pick another window if the things I need to show up end in another window.

So, what do you typically do? Entire screen or window, why, what problems for each?

Thanks!

Google Meet allows you to share tabs, or windows, for example; this works better for scenarios where the presenter uses a larger relative screen area that might be illegible when shared as full-screen. Plus-least privilege and all that.

I share my entire screen, but most of my windows are full screen anyway.

Thanks. And you don’t have issues when notifications popup for example? Perhaps ok with co-workers… maybe a problem if presenting to “strangers”?

I don’t present to strangers :)

I’d hope that all my colleagues realise that the only way to be sure that I’m not currently sharing my Slack window on Zoom is to be on a Zoom call with me :) But I don’t worry about sharing the content of notifications that pop up, it’s not been a problem for me. (They do get in the way occasionally, but that’s a different issue.)
