In the old days, if work B referred to work A, one was unlikely to get it unless one was already familiar with A. These days, it's not uncommon for me, in exploring the space around B, to turn up commentary with enough of a search term that allows me to discover A. If you're doing what I do when I do something like that, the problem with that method is that it's extremely time-consuming.
